My pastel art is currently about capturing fleeting landscapes and images from nature embodying special light, detail, and contrast capable of triggering an emotional response from the viewer.
I paint for many reasons:
it brings me joy because I am able to create a more permanent “rendering” of an image that originally moved me emotionally which I can share with others;
it challenges me intellectually because in order to successfully create, I am required to use all of the artist’s skill set which includes an ongoing understanding of color theory, the inter-relationship of the elements of art (line, shape, texture, value) and an ability to execute those elements within a chosen composition. This skill set also includes a surprising amount of mathematics, and science;
it hones my ability to focus and concentrate because it requires attention to detail;
it is meditative because in being fully absorbed it brings peace to my being.
I choose to work in pastels:
because of all the painting mediums, pastel has the least amount of binder and therefore yields the most saturated and intense colors; because my artistic strengths are in drawing and shading as opposed to mixing and blending brush strokes.
